They are besieged by a host of external influences that may shape or cloud their ability to take responsibility. These influences include family, friends, religious beliefs, personal biases, and socioeconomic background. Doherty (1998) argues that society’s increasing refusal to hold individuals accountable for their actions and a tendency to blame others for the individual’s circumstances are a concerning trend. Doherty (1998) cites the tragic Jonesboro, Arkansas shooting in 1998 as a case in point, where two teenagers opened fire on students at a middle school. His article examines the reactions of the political and intellectual classes at the time and their unwillingness to place responsibility on the perpetrators, instead blaming all of us individually and collectively. Personal responsibility, however, must begin with a smaller, individual action. For example, for students to attain any level of success in college, they must accept responsibility for the decisions they make every day. These decisions will include when to study and for how long, when to go to class, what type of job they need, and how they will socialize. Nontraditional or adult returning students face the same challenges but have more experience in handling these issues in most cases than traditional students. This experience, their recall of it, and the growth that ensued, can help them make better-informed decisions. Both categories of students, however, must exhibit some level of personal responsibility in order to accomplish college uccess. In my experience as a student and as a professional, one aspect of personal responsibility many people struggle with is time management. Time management is an essential skill that must be acquired in order to be able to accomplish assigned tasks efficiently and by a given deadline. This is my Waterloo. I find myself spending most of my time doing things that must be done urgently to meet a deadline and wondering what happened to all the time that I thought had to accomplish the task in. If I am unable to manage my time well, it adversely affects my work, education, and personal life. Time is a finite resource that cannot be recovered once spent. In spending or managing my time, it is essential to learn and employ strategies that work for me and to be mindful of new ideas or technologies to improve the outcomes. One of the strategies that I have rediscovered is outlined in our current text. I am going to re-implement a daily to-do list. I did this previously but became lazy with it and just attempted to keep track of what I needed to accomplish in my head. Now that I run a full-time business, am a full-time student, and have a full-time family, I need to evaluate my ability to keep track of the things that I want to accomplish. Amanda Mergler, Ph. D. states in her doctoral dissertation, â€Å"Personal responsibility has been defined as being accountable to oneself and the needs and well-being of others. † Mergler, A. (2007). I need to be able to prioritize tasks so that I am more efficient in accomplishing them. This will give me a greater ability to meet my responsibilities and be able to meet the needs of those who depend on me. We face different challenges every day as students and professionals. Recognizing external influences for what they are and maintaining individual accountability for our actions is important for success in any arena. Going to college is an outstanding opportunity for personal growth if the student takes advantage of it. One of the ways to do this is to become the master of ime and not let time master us. While we may not be able to control all of the outside influences we are bombarded with, if we master our time we can be one step closer to achieving the goals we have set. Gilbert is a young man who wants nothing more than to leave and pursue something bigger. Gilbert is tied down due to his family who he must help, as they are in quite a struggle as it is. Gilberts brother, Arnie is almost eighteen and suffers from a mental disability. Gilbert must constantly watch Arnie so as to make sure he does not get into any trouble, or cause trouble for anyone else. Arnie’s mother, Bonnie is morbidly obese and has continued to eat her pain away ever since her husband, committed suicide. Gilbert also has two sisters, Amy and Ellen. Amy helps her mother and Arnie as much as she can and is selflessly assisting them in any way she can. Ellen is a fifteen-year-old girl, generally too swept up in her adolescent social life to do next to anything to help out. The film uses a number of film techniques, such as: mise-en-scene, and a variety of long shots and close-ups. Gilberts family and Gilbert himself especially are afflicted with many difficulties in their lives. Gilberts problems are everyone else’s, as they all affect him. There is a close up on Bonnies face during this scene, this is done to show the audience that she attempts to remain strong and with dignity, however due to the closeness of the shot you are able to see the small twitches in her face which let you know she is extremely self conscious. During the car ride to and from the town there is a long shot of the car with the right side extremely lopsided, showing how large she is, another technique the director has used is the mise-en-scene, showing the whole family eating dinner at the table, and showing just how large Bonnie is by comparison. Arnie is Gilberts younger brother; he suffers from a mental illness, which is not specified in the film. Arnie constantly needs to be under surveillance. Arnie has a bad habit of climbing the water tower, forcing the police and the fire station to come and get him down. Gilbert cannot watch Arnie 24/7, as he has other affairs to attend to. Arnie is often a burden on the rest of the household, often getting lost, and generally being utterly dependant, against his own free will. Arnie often cannot control what he says, for example at the dinner table he cannot stop repeating â€Å"dad’s dead! † over and over, slowly driving Bonnie to insanity. Bonnie’s death hits Arnie the hardest, where the rest saw it as somewhat of a burden being relieved from them, Arnie was shocked, his mother was all he had besides Gilbert, and with her gone too, Arnie was having tremendous difficulty comprehending the situation. Arnie is quite out going and grows to be quite dirty often, this is illustrated clearly when he is shown for a long period of time with dirt, among other things coated over him. When Arnie climbs the water tower for the second time there is an extremely long shot of him from across the town where he is seen climbing the tower. Gilbert, while being arguably the most normal of the family is also the most burdened. Gilbert is caught in the crossfire of all of his family’s problems, and is the person who they rely on to make things right. Gilbert wishes to leave Endora and move somewhere with opportunities, where he can be somebody. Endora is a desolate, poor excuse for a town of any sort; this is shown by everything having a greyish filter and focusing on images such as paint peeling. Gilbert must look after Arnie and cater to his mothers needs. At one point it is all too much for Gilbert, making him snap and resulting in him striking Arnie in a blind rage. In one scene, Arnie continuously repeats the words â€Å"we’re not going anywhere, we’re not going anywhere† and although it is used in a different context, it is easy to see that Gilbert is thinking about his life and escaping from Endora. Gilbert is having an affair with the wife of an insurance salesman, Betty. This situation puts Gilbert under high stress, especially when Gilbert is asked to meet Mr Carver face to face. Betty then burns the house, resulting in Mr Carters breakdown, causing cardiac arrest and consequential in his death. This on top of what Gilbert already carries upon his shoulders everyday is quite the affliction. Liver function tests include tests depict cholestasis (alkaline phosphatase, gamma glutamyl transpeptidase), tests reflecting the synthetic function of the liver tests (albumin and prothrombin time),tests portraying excretion (bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase and gamma glutamyl transpeptidase) and tests monitoring the amount of cell damage or liver injury (Aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase). Bilirubin This is a yellow compound or pigment formed by the breakdown of haemoglobin. This originates from the breakdown of worn out, old or damaged red blood cells. The senescent blood cells are taken up and destroyed macrophages (Kupffer cells) of the phagocytic system (which are located primarily in the spleen and in the liver. During the breakdown of haemoglobin into heme and globin, the globin is further degraded to form new proteins and the heme part forms bilverdin. In the Kupffer cells, the bilverdin is converted to bilirubin by the use of enzymes. The bilirubin is then released into the plasma where it binds to albumin and becomes an unconjugated bilirubin. The unconjugated or free bilirubin enters the hepatocytes and after mixing with glucuronic acid, it becomes a conjugated bilirubin. This conjugated bilirubin is water soluble and hence, soluble in bile, therefore if the outflow of bile is interrupted, conjugated bilirubin will affect the colour of the urine, it becomes darker. Conjugated bilirubin enters into the small intestines through the bile ducts and there, it is deconjugated into urobilinogen by bacteria. The urobilinogin formed could either be reabsorbed into circulation by the hepatic portal vein into the liver to be re-excreted into the bile or excreted in faeces. This process is known as the enterohepatic circulation. The urobilinogen excreted in faeces or urine is oxidized to urobilin which is responsible for the colour of faeces. There are two tests which are carried out for bilirubin. They are direct-reacting (which is carried out for conjugated bilirubin) and indirect-reacting (which is carried out for unconjugated bilirubin). Various conditions can lead to an elevation in the amount of bilirubin in the blood, such as blockage of the bile ducts, excess production of bilirubin, reduced conjugation, reduced secretion and reduced uptake by the liver. Increased levels of indirect bilirubin are usually caused by liver cell disorder. An example is in hepatitis where the damaged biliary excretion leads to the presence of excess faecal urobilinogen in the urine. This gives the urine a darker colour and can be used as an indication of early cell injury. And an increase of direct bilirubin characteristically results from an obstruction which could either be located within or outside the liver (e.g.  a blockage in the bile ducts or gallstones). When the bile duct is obstructed, the concentration of urinary urobilino gen reduces because the stoppage in the excretion of bile into the gut does not lead to synthesis of the faecal urobilinogen. Albumin. Albumin is a major protein which is synthesised by the liver cells and secreted into the blood. The capacity of the synthetic function of the liver can be measured with the use of albumin. The serum albumin test, therefore, is carried out in order to measure the amount of protein in the serum. Albumin has a comparatively long half life of twenty one days, therefore, liver damage must persist (be long term) before reduced levels of serum can be noticed. Inability to maintain the serum levels between the reference value of 35- 50 g/L leads to a low reading of albumin, referred to as hypoalbuminaemia, which signifies impending liver failure. Apart from liver failure, there are other conditions which can result in low serum albumin. Examples include urinary loss, hypercatabolism and also severe malnutrition. Alkaline Phosphatase: Alkaline phosphatase is an isoenzyme which is present in the liver canalicular plasma membrane of hepatocytes, in the placenta, intestine and in the bone for bone building. The normal amount of alkaline phosphates is less 100 IU/L. Increase in alkaline phosphatase is mostly due to increase in enzyme production in areas close to an obstruction and also due to the molecular weight of the biliary isoenzyme. This can be detected with the used of serum electrophoresis. Increase in alkaline phosphatase can be caused by disorders such as cholestasis within the liver (intrahepatic) or outside the live (extrahepatic), space occupying lesions (such as abscesses, cysts and tumours) and hepatitis. During pregnancy, the isoenzyme located in the placenta is released and the isoenzyme in the bone is also released in children and adolescents during growth. These are known as physiological increases in serum alkaline phosphatase. In disorders such as rickets, the serum alkaline phosphatase level is i ncreased. This type of increase is called a pathological increase. And although bilirubin levels increase alongside alkaline phosphatase levels, sometimes the bilirubin value can remain normal regardless of an increased alkaline phosphatase level. Gamma Glutamyl transpeptidase Gamma-glutamyltraferse, gGT, is a glycoprotein which is found in many tissues such as the prostate, liver, intestine, pancreas, and kidneys. It has a normal range which is 20 times (1000U/L), it is considered severe and the raised ALT level can lead to severe viral hepatitis , circulatory shock and drug or toxin induced necrosis. The levels of AST and ALT are reasonably increased (2 30 times) in hepatitis (e.g. alcoholic hepatitis). An increased level of AST normally indicates acute abnormality of liver, heart and/or skeletal muscles.

Privatizing the industry has led to drastic increase in the number of air service providers and the airline travellers. Legal provision Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) was established to control the activities of the commercial Airline industry; it used to set the rates and even the mergers in the industry till the first forty years after its establishment. Then Airline Deregulation Act 1978 was adopted to make the industry more efficient and privately owned. This act removed the powers of CAB, subsequently CAB was wound up in 1984. The role of research in military technology has contributed a lot to the commercial jets (Collopy, 2004). The commercial airline industry has gone way ahead than the military aircraft industry, due to its public outreach. However the technology in military aircrafts is still way ahead.
